The iconic cable cars of San Francisco are the world’s last manually operated cable cars. They are awesome to photograph but at the same time really frustrating! Hyde street is really photogenic, with beautiful houses and massive fiscus trees lining the street and at the top you also have a great view across to Alcatraz. I had an image in my head of what I wanted to capture but sadly it just wasn’t doable unless you had a death wish due to the other traffic on the road. The Powell & Hyde street cars were my favourite and it was great watching people gleefully hanging off the side of them as they made their way up and down the hilly street.
The Market-Fisherman’s Wharf street cars were also pretty neat but again quite tricky to photograph as you need to try and avoid traffic and tourists. Luckily I passed by this one that had stopped. Standing, watching them is like taking a little trip back in time as both the cable and street cars haven’t really changed since their introduction to the city.
