Lady Helen Nurseries is located in Cardenden and is one of the few traditional working nurseries left in Fife. Established in 1988, the nursery is run by Maggie and Ross who are on hand to help you with your gardening questions and to offer top advice. I was asked to go along and take photographs of the nursery before their bedding plants went on sale and I thought I would share these with you. I believe it is important to support local businesses and if you are looking to brighten up your garden this summer, be sure to take a trip to Lady Helen Nurseries where you will find first class plants that last well into autumn.
In addition to their bedding plants (which are on sale now), they also sell a range of premium plants for hanging baskets and pots. You can take along your own to be filled from the 2nd of June. A selection of vegetable plants are also on offer: leek, onion, peppers, cucumber, courgette and tomatoes.
It was interesting to see behind the scenes of how the nursery is run. It is clearly hard, tiring work and most of the plants are sown on site. It was also clear that both Maggie and Ross are passionate about what they do and take pride in the plants they produce. There were polytunnels and glasshouses full of beautiful bright coloured plants ready for sale. Each plant has been sown, pricked out, watered and nurtured by hand. I can’t wait to get some for my own garden!
I can’t write about Lady Helen Nurseries without also mentioning Maggie and Ross’ two gorgeous collies Trinny & Peaches. If you visit the nursery you will no doubt be greeted by these two friendly, affectionate and well-behaved dogs. I couldn’t help but take quite a few photographs of Peaches. Trinny on the other hand… well it would seem she believes the camera steals her soul as she sulks off as soon as she spies a camera, bless!
The nursery is open 7 days from the 20th March to 31st July, from 10am-6pm. During bedding season (26th May-20th June) these hours are extended to 9am-8pm. The nursery is closed from the 1st August to 22nd September. It reopens for the autumn season on 23rd September until 31st October. Wreaths are also available from 1st-24th December. The nursery is closed all of November and from the 25th December through to the 19th of March. For more information please visit their Facebook page.
